Bloganuary Day 28 – Describe Your Perfect Birthday Cake

Published January 28, 2023 by Maryanne

A vegan birthday cake, from Glitter Thicket, Nyack, New York

Today’s prompt excited me because as a vegan I know firsthand that many people are not aware of how much fun vegan food can be. Glitter thicket is a small, but gorgeous, cafe in Nyack, New York. My husband and I visited last summer and it was like being in a fairy land, so cozy, adorable, and precious.

Larissa, the owner, is a sweet heart. She really goes out of her way to give visitors a great experience. There’s plenty of handmade shopping creations there like jewelry and fairy houses.

And the food is delicious! A birthday cake that tastes as good as it looks is definitely a perfect cake!

50th Anniversary of Jesus Christ Superstar

Published January 15, 2023 by Maryanne

My husbnad Dennis, Ted Neeley, and I

Last night, the 50th Anniversary of the film Jesus Christ Superstar was shown at the Villa Victoria Academy in Ewing Township, NJ. It was powerful seeing it again on the big screen. When I first saw it, I was only 9-years-old. I went with my Mom.

Of all the biblical movies I saw, I always thought Ted Neeley was the best Jesus. Meeting him, you could tell he is strong in his faith. He was an incredible person. He looked so excited to meet us, but not just us — he treated all his fans like family, with great big, long hugs, and excitable conversation.

We met him after the movie, along with Bob Bingham who played Caiaphas. Prior to the showing, we met Kurt Yaghijian who played Annas. He was selling JC Superstar Jewelry. My husband got me a necklace and Kurt signed the box.

Then we all headed in to see the movie. Though it’s been 50 years since I saw it on the big screen, it’s always been a favorite Easter holiday movie for me, throughout the years. The music is fantastic, with hits such as “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” I also love King Herod’s song, which is a super fun number. (Alice Cooper has covered it, and he does a great version of it).

Before the screening there was a panel discussion with the cast members.

I love this photo of Ted meeting my husband! You would think they are old friends!

A warm hug from Ted Neeley

Bloganuary – Day 14 – ROAD TRIPS!

Published January 14, 2023 by Maryanne

On a road trip to Maryland to see Cher in concert a few years ago!

My preferred mode of travel is a no brainer — road trips! Yes, I’ve been on a plane more times than I’d like to remember — out of the country, business trips, visiting friends…All fine and good. It’s fun to fly, but let’s just say I like it, I don’t LOVE it like many people do. The best part of flying is always landing. One of my favorite flights was coming home from a trip to Arizona on a July 4th weekend and seeing fireworks from the plane as we were landing. Another was being on a plane when I was a little kid and seeing the moon so close! And everyone remembers their first time flying alone. Maybe that’s why I’m not a fan, I flew too many times alone. Turbulance. Stuck in an ice storm where the plane circled endlessly until it was clear (frightening!) Being stuck in an airport for eight hours because of a flight delay due to bad weather. Not for me.

But a road trip? YAY!

I loved road trips since I was a little kid. Driving down to Florida each summer with my grandparents and sister. A trip that could take less than a day was turned into three days. We’d watch the scenery, play games, stop in random hotels. It was super fun. Then as a teenager my family took a trip across the country and back to New Jersey. In just three weeks we visited 22 states!

As I got older, I’ve taken road trips with so many friends. It was always fun, magical, and bonding. If I took a road trip with a friend, I felt that made them a good one. After all, you spend so much time together on a road trip, you have to really like each other.

When I first started dating my husband, Dennis, I was thrilled that he shared the same passion for being on the road. As an added bonus, we love music so we can enjoy a CD or a favorite radio station on long trips.

Another reason I prefer road trips to plane trips is I love the comforts of home. I’m not much of a rough-it person (though I’ve been camping a few times). I like to pack as much crap as I can. Outfits for any type of weather we may encounter. At least one super cute dress if we go somewhere fancy. And shoes that are appropriate for something physical like long walks or being on a boat. On a plane, packing isn’t so generous. And the whole security thing always freaks me out. I remember on one of my solo travels I had to BEG security to not dump my costly hypoallergenic make-up.

On a road trip, you can changes courses if you choose to do so. You can be more spontaneous. And you can come home earlier if you like. (Though that never happened. However, I remember paying extra to take a plane ride home a day earlier because I just wasn’t digging the trip I was on.)

Road trips are cool because you see so much. The United States is absolutely beautiful. Not only is each state different, but sections of each state is different. You could travel the entire state of New Jersey in less than four or five hours. But stop in each historic town and you’ll get a taste of local charm. Some towns are artistic and trendy, whereas others are what my grandmother would call a “one horse town” where not much is going on.

As I write this, I realize something that is a big deal. While I’ve taken flights alone, I never went on a road trip all by myself. I’ve taken very long drives alone, almost two hours, for business, but not a road trip overnighter. Perhaps that is something to put on my to-do list. Though as I get older, the more I realize, there is truly no place like home. 🙂

Bloganuary – Day 12 – SPOILED! … Or Not?

Published January 12, 2023 by Maryanne

Me, at CAKE, NYC, mid-1990s

Today’s Bloganuary prompt asks “What Chore Do You Find Most Challenging?”

When I hear “chore” I think about house cleaning. I suppose a chore could be anything, but let’s talk about house cleaning. I’m slightly ashamed to admit, I am spoiled. I was raised by my grandmother and she did everything for me. When I moved out on my own, the first thing I learned to do was wash clothes, because I felt clean clothes were important. However, there were many chores I actually liked — washing dishes, sorting things out (like paperwork, magazines, clothing, etc.) and putting things away.

I also love food shopping. Making the bed. And doing laundry. In fact, the chore that scared me the most is the one I embrace. Ten years ago I wrote a blog, “The Laundry Journals” (https://maryannemistretta.wordpress.com/2012/07/14/the-laundry-journals/) which explains why I love doing the laundry (reasons you may not even consider!)

And, believe it or not, I don’t mind cleaning toilets!! Maybe I’m not so spoiled after all?

What I don’t like is cleaning floors. In fact, when I lived by myself, I hired help to do that. So, maybe I am spoiled?

I also hate vacuuming. My husband does that. Yeah, I’m spoiled.

But I LOVE cooking and serving. Again, maybe I’m not so spoiled after all?

And worse of all, home repairs! Even though hire someone to do it, you have these strange people coming in your home, sometimes saying dumb, annoying things (thinking they are funny), and having the house in an upset until everything is finished. If dealing with all that isn’t a “chore” I don’t know what is?

The point of this blog is, there will always be things we don’t love to do, and if we don’t love doing them, we shouldn’t have to. When I think of the chores I love or don’t mind, I believe it’s because of HOW I do them. I’ll listen to music, I’ll be in my head letting my imagination run wild, or I’ll be thinking of a health benefit to doing a particular chore.

Chores are like art. You will go through a period where it’s just downright ugly. But once it’s finished, you can look back at your masterpiece. Fresh, crisp laundry. A sparkling floor. A toilet so clean it looks brand new!

If you think of chores as art, you may feel like you are spoiled too! Embrace each day, each moment can be so much fun!

Bloganuary Day 11 – How Do You Define Success?

Published January 11, 2023 by Maryanne

Me, last June … A picture of happiness!

Why are we put on this planet? To make the leave the world in a better place than when we found it. There are so many ways to do this, by being a great wife/mother/daughter/sister/friend, by excelling at our careers and then giving back to the community, volunteering, writing a book, etc. …. All of this CAN be done. But in order to do so, we have to put ourselves first.

In order to do this, we have to know what we want and not settle for less. Sometimes we don’t know what we want, so we have to ferret out what we don’t want.

I can honestly say I live a successful life because I have more happy days than sad ones. I work for myself as a public speaker and writer/editor. I also cat sit, model, and am a non-union actress. I’ve created this beautiful bubble of a life where I prefer to be around creative like-minds and avoid gossipers and trouble makers.

Best of all, as I write almost every day, I married my soul mate. My husband is my best friend and biggest supporter.

When you have a foundation such as this, you can get through the sad times (the saddest times are ALWAYS death – whether it’s a good friend or a family member or a pet, this happens more often when you’re over 40).

Life can be hard at times. Look at 2020, we were all in the same boat with the pandemic. People lost jobs (I lost about 15 speaking engagements!). People got sick. And some even lost friends. (I lost three; only one to Covid, but two for other illness, including someone I could consider one of my best friends). But during the pandemic, I also grew. I didn’t write another book like I thought I would, but I had quite a few writing and editing clients. I also was able to collaborate with my husband and record a song together. (Those singing lessons paid off, but I am so NOT a singer! This was work, and I haven’t recorded a song with him since!)

So, you see, we all have our crosses to bear, but if you have that foundation of things that are solid in your life (for me, it’s my husband and my career), you won’t be as shaken during a bad time. But most of all, the success has to come from within — what is in your heart, and even your brain! You are the creator of your success, your happiness. Nothing is stopping YOU!

Bloganuary Day 10 – Has a Book Changed Your Life?

Published January 10, 2023 by Maryanne

Me, at Cake in NYC, mid-1990s (Book cover by Darlene Foster)

My very first book, “On the Guest List” not only changed my life, but the life of others.

First, let me say, as a person who had a career in journalism almost my entire adult life, I had ZERO interest in writing a book. I loved the satisfaction of writing an article, having it published, and getting paid. And I was so good at it, not only did I make a living as a journalist, I received an award for investigative journalism.

Once I started my own business, Pear Tree Enterprises, in 2008, I had many clients who I helped edit their books and get them to publication. A friend said, “You’re doing this for everyone else, why not do it for yourself?” She planted a seed.

I wrote my first book, “On the Guest List” back in 2013. It was about my adventures as a music journalist.

While writing the book, I blogged about a man who inspired me when I was a teenager. He was an ex-marine and also did the pyrotechnics for The Plasmatics. How does this tie in with my book? Well, the original drummer of the Plasmatics, Stu Deutsche, was the first person to put me “on the guest list.” I met him at a record store and he asked me, “Are you going to our show tonight?”

I told him I was only 17 and couldn’t get in. Back then there were no “all ages” shows. Well, he put me on the guest list, and at age 17, I was in a bar watching the outrageous show The Plasmatics put on.

Anyway, thanks to my blog about this, a young woman contacted me and said the owner of the health food store was her real father. I put them in contact with each other! This story was so heartwarming, it made the local news!

THEN, at my very first book reading/signing, at a local library, I noticed a young girl in the audience who really seemed to connect with what I was saying. We locked eyes several times. I signed her book and we kept in touch.

About a year later, she contacted me and asked if I’d officiate her wedding! It turned at, her date at my book signing was a guy she was interested in. They fell in love and were now engaged.

I became a certified wedding officiant, and their wedding was the best wedding, other than my own, that I ever attended!

It’s amazing how your life can change in a heartbeat. Keep being true to yourself. And if you would like to write your own book, contact me to set up a consultation. My rates are competitive, so serious only need apply! I’m at: maryannechristiano@gmail.com

Bloganuary Day 9 – The Most Memorable Gift I’ve Received

Published January 9, 2023 by Maryanne

I can’t say it enough — the most memorable gift I received was from God and The Universe. My husband!

We knew each other forever. I used to follow his band when I was a teenager, but we hardly said more than “hello” to each other. I always thought he was good looking, but I was shy and it seemed we were always involved with other people. Then in 2005, the band had a reunion. That is when I had my moment to talk a bit more with Dennis. I was crushing very hard. A few weeks later he called me and we’ve been inseparable ever since.

Now, over 17 years later, we’re still madly in love. He’s really my best friend. We connect on all levels, spiritually, mentally, physically, and intellectually. We both share a love for the most important things in life, animals (mainly cats) and music. We are never bored with each other and can talk — and laugh — for hours. Each morning we both wake up with smiles on our faces, ready to start another day. If we’re apart, we connect via emails throughout the day.

I’m so genuinely happy we are together. I can’t imagine life without him, or with anyone else. It’s truly a blessing to be with your heart and soul mate. I wish this for everyone. The key is, don’t settle!

(I offer one-to-one ZOOM classes on How to Meet Your Soul Mate, if anyone is interested, contact me at: maryannechristiano@gmail.com … I’ve hosted them during the pandemic and will be starting up again. Rates are very reasonable).

Bloganuary – Day 8 – How Far Back in Your Family Tree Can You Go?

Published January 8, 2023 by Maryanne

From left to right, my Aunt “Tommy” Thomasina, and the little girl is my mom, Charlotte, next to her my Uncle Kenny as a little boy, and on the right is my Grandma Mary.

A few years ago I digged into my family tree with Heritage and learned some interesting things. All my life I thought I was mainly Italian/Polish, but Polish is a smaller part. I am mostly Italian/Greek, with a splash of Polish, Russian, Spanish, and Iranian. I have distant cousins all over the world.

However, from the family I knew, the furthest back was Grandma Gus. She was born in 1898 in Brooklyn, New York. She ended up in Pennsylvania and had my Grandma Mary in 1918, and she had my mother in 1943. Around this time, everyone was in New Jersey.

Grandma Gus lived until 1983. She was 86 when she died. She cooked for me and my sister in the 1960s/1970s because everyone else in my family worked, including my grandmother who was a short-order cook at a tavern.

Unfortunately we were too young to ask her many questions about “the olden days.” I was only 19 when she died, and she was very ill in her final years so I didn’t get a chance to know her too well. She was a bit of a hard-ass, a real tough lady who smoked and put whisky on our teeth when we had toothaches as kids. But she had a soft side too. She loved animals. I remember a photo of her with a puppy on her lap. She looked so happy. Perhaps I got my animal-loving gene from her. She also liked cute guys. I remember, being around 12 or 13 and having the Bay City Rollers album, “Dedication.” She thought my favorite, Ian Mitchell, was cute. She saw the album cover and called him a “doll baby” which back then meant really cute!

Around the house Grandma Gus usually wore a mu-mu, as Grandma Mary did, but when she went out, she dressed to the nines in a coat with a mink collar (As an animal person, I now cringe about mink!) Grandma Gus and Grandma Mary often fought, and Grandma Gus would “leave home.” It was very dramatic. My mother and grandmother let her go, but 20 minutes later we’d all pile in the car to get her to come back. It was hilarious seeing this little old lady, all dressed up with a black coat and mink collar, walking down the street with a suitcase.

Another great memory about Grandma Gus was a dish she made called pizza frit. It was simply fried dough topped with sugar. I can’t believe this was one of the go-to meals my sister and I had as kids. We also lived with second hand smoke because both grandmothers smoked non-stop — and often while cooking!

Times were different back then, but we survived. Rest in paradise, Grandma Gus and Grandma Mary.

Bloganuary Day 7 – A Short Story About Rain

Published January 7, 2023 by Maryanne

Anticipating rain with my husband’s Led Zep umbrella! (Montclair, NJ August 2022)

One of the best things about being a kid in the 1970s was walking everywhere. Everything was more spaced out, less congested. The world was your playground, but you had to walk to get there — like the mall or the candy store. Even going to a Burger King meant a long walk and hopping over a fence.

On a very hot summer day, my sister and our younger cousin were heading back home, from somewhere. We were tired of walking and sweating. It was annoying and uncomfortable.

But I had a bright idea, “Let’s do a rain dance!” (A North American Indian ritual to summon rain).

There we were, three kids, dancing in a circle on the sidewalk, as cars passed, chanting for rain.

Suddenly, the sky opened up and it did rain! We were so excited. We made it rain!

Nothing beats getting caught in a summer rainfall. It’s fun and exhilarating. But the real moral of this story is, we should continue to BELIEVE as we did as children. Life can be magical, if you believe!

Bloganuary Day 6 – Why Do You Write?

Published January 6, 2023 by Maryanne

FOR THE MONEY! LUCKY ME!

Why do you write? Perhaps I can say “for the money” because I’m blessed that this is what I do for a living. That photo above is my latest book, which can be found in Barnes & Noble bookstores, and also the first book I wrote where I received an advance check! Coincidentally, today a check is going in the mail from another book publisher — as I just signed a contract to write my sixth book which will be about the Jersey Shore!

However, it didn’t start out that way. I was a very late bloomer. No, I didn’t write for the school newspaper. As a teen, I was a lost soul who didn’t know what I wanted in life. I just wanted to be left alone and not bullied. I somehow knew better days were coming. The month I graduated was the happiest day of my life. My younger sister Kim said something genius to me, “Now you should want the time to go really slow.” I had everything to live for because the bullies were GONE!

I didn’t go to college and began working right away. I came from a single-parent household and had to pay “room and board” to live at home. I had a temp job, then I worked as a shipping clerk at Scribner Book Company. I was around books and often had the opportunity to bring freebies home and read. I was always a reader and loved going to the library with my mom as a kid.

Back then, the drinking age was 18. Since I loved music, I went to see bands in New York City every single night and come home around 5 a.m. because life began after midnight back in the early 1980s. The next day I’d sleep in my car during my lunch break.

I had become friends with a young girl named Lisa James (RIP) — who later became TJ Ellis after transitioning to male, and we kept in touch until TJ’s death a few years ago. Out of respect, I will call “Lisa” by their name TJ. … TJ had this really cool fanzine (a self-published fan magazine) called Punk, Junk, and Pasttimes. She made me her assistant editor and I helped her write articles and conduct interviews. We had some very wild times with NYC punk musicians, which I’ll share another time. But this is what gave me the writing bug.

All this was before the internet and if you wanted to get published, you’d have to type stories on a typewriter. I didn’t get my first home computer until the 1990s. I took at home writing courses from Writer’s Digest and The Children’s Institute of Literature. Back then, I was hesitant about my talents and only submitted a few stories and received a few rejection slips. In the meantime, I wrote poetry, which was easy. I read my poetry in coffee houses, art galleries, and bars. And it was very well received. I even had a write up in the Star Ledger, which is a very popular New Jersey newspaper.

My big break came in 1995. I was hired as assistant to the publisher for Outlaw Biker Enterprises. They published magazines like Outlaw Biker, Tattoo Review, Skin Art, Art Alternatives, and In the Flesh. In the very beginning I sold ads for the magazines. I excelled and even got bonuses. But I did not want to be a sales person, I wanted to write. I became friends with the editor and by that summer, I had my first article published — worldwide!! These magazines were extremely popular with young people in the tattoo community all over the planet!

From then, I went on to write for a series of newspapers and magazines in NYC. It was like being a celebrity. I was able to get on the guest list for all theatre, free meals at restaurants, and live music. Sometimes I’d work until the wee hours of the night and get to go home in a town car! What a life!

After 9/11 I didn’t want to work in NYC anymore, and I scored a job at a local newspaper for seven years. Again, the perks were incredible. Plus this time I even got free yoga classes! I also became an award-winning journalist, exposing the Montclair police force for writing more tickets for parking violations versus moving violations.

Seven years later, I decided to work for myself and created my company Pear Tree Enterprises (the link is below) during the summer of 2008. I’ve helped countless writers edit their books and get them published. From 2013 to 2019 I wrote five books. One of those five books, “Love Cats” is in it’s second printing under my pen name Kyrstianna Mercury.

In addition to book writing, I continue working as an editor, journalist, and proofreader. (Along with public/motivational speaking, non-union acting, cat sitting, and sometimes over 50 modeling!)

I absolutely love my career as a writer and feel blessed to make a living doing so. Writing isn’t something you decide to do — writing chooses YOU. If you find yourself unhappy at your day job, not getting along with people because they are not as deep as you are, or not being able to go ONE DAY without writing, even if it’s just in your journal, this may be your calling!

And do not think, for one minute, that writers can’t make money. Yes, it’s not the same as it was decades ago, but YOU CAN make a lot of money as a writer, with a very healthy, comfortable salary. Just keep shooting those arrows. Perhaps start part-time then elevate to a career!

I wish all writers the best of luck! I am available for ZOOM coaching, as I’ve coached other writers. Email me for rates and to set up a consult: maryannechristiano@gmail.com …. I am a real person and less expensive than many writing scams you see out there!
