50th Anniversary of Jesus Christ Superstar

My husbnad Dennis, Ted Neeley, and I

Last night, the 50th Anniversary of the film Jesus Christ Superstar was shown at the Villa Victoria Academy in Ewing Township, NJ. It was powerful seeing it again on the big screen. When I first saw it, I was only 9-years-old. I went with my Mom.

Of all the biblical movies I saw, I always thought Ted Neeley was the best Jesus. Meeting him, you could tell he is strong in his faith. He was an incredible person. He looked so excited to meet us, but not just us — he treated all his fans like family, with great big, long hugs, and excitable conversation.

We met him after the movie, along with Bob Bingham who played Caiaphas. Prior to the showing, we met Kurt Yaghijian who played Annas. He was selling JC Superstar Jewelry. My husband got me a necklace and Kurt signed the box.

Then we all headed in to see the movie. Though it’s been 50 years since I saw it on the big screen, it’s always been a favorite Easter holiday movie for me, throughout the years. The music is fantastic, with hits such as “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” I also love King Herod’s song, which is a super fun number. (Alice Cooper has covered it, and he does a great version of it).

Before the screening there was a panel discussion with the cast members.

I love this photo of Ted meeting my husband! You would think they are old friends!

  • I hadn’t thought of “Jesus Christ, Superstar” for year. I love that musical. What a wonderful experience you had. I’m off to download it to my Spotify “musicals” playlist.”

    • That’s so cool! There are several versions of the musical production with different people playing Jesus (we have one in French!) Ian Gillan from Deep Purple was a great Jesus voice too!

  • What do you think?
