Billy Cat Update!

Billy, 19, has thyroid issues and arthritis, but is not in pain.

My husband has been taking him for acupuncture treatments in order to help him walk, as his hind legs have been giving out. He’s been staying in one spot behind the couch for several weeks now, unable to climb stairs, unable to lift his paws into the litter box.

He’s been making leaps and bounds with his holistic treatments. He’s making the effort to walk. His body is FINALLY absorbing all the nutrients so he gained five ounces back! We have him on B-12 vitamins and both holistic and thyroid medications.

The holistic vet is pleased with his progress and so are we. Today the vet used aqua-puncture, which is hypodermic needles filled with vitamins, shot in acupuncture areas for healing. He’s doing so well, his regular acupuncture treatments will now only be once a month.

But it’s still very sad to have an old, sick pet, that isn’t what he used to be. It breaks our hearts.

His illness is truly taking a toll on us, as the stress has been affecting my back. I went to the chiropractor twice this week, after not having to go for two months.

But we are doing our best to make Billy as comfortable and happy as possible. Sacrificing portions of our Sundays together to stay home with Billy and make sure he’s okay. Whenever we spend a lot of time with him, he really makes the effort to improve.

Tonite, we’re treating ourselves. Going to an outdoor concert with a few of our friends. Mommy and Daddy need a night out.

Sunday Happies

Having a wonderful Sunday!

Skipped working out to get to church on time, which is always fantastic and uplifting.

Had a delicious vegan salad at Grill Creations in Garwood, with my husband. Always great fresh food and excellent service. Can’t go wrong there, highly recommended! The owner even came to our table to say hello.

Next, we took a ride to Scotti’s Record Shop in Summit, the oldest indie record shop in the country, started in 1956! Check them out: http://scottisrecordshops.com/

It was great shopping there because they were playing a CD I really enjoyed by Wilco.

SAM_1474The new HIM CD, “Tears on Tape”!

I treated myself to two old CDs, Splitz Endz and Kid Creole and the Coconuts. Dennis surprised me with a treat, the new HIM CD, “Tears on Tape” which is amazing!

Then I treated my hunny for a coffee. Felt nice to sit on a couch and relax, away from the hot hot heat wave!

I’ve never been to the Echo Queen Diner, but it’s always sad to see another building demolished. Dennis took these shots on the way home.

SAM_1482Soon to be no more!

Then we came home and Billy Cat was walking all around the house! Walking like a drunken sailor, mind you, but he is truly making a great effort to get his hind legs going again. This was the BEST he’s been since he’s been sick. He is healing and it’s such a blessing! He’s no longer hiding behind the couch. He wants to walk, to eat, to be sociable. It’s absolutely amazing. It’s nearly a miracle, thanks to the pet acupuncture and God! YAY!

There is more good news on the horizon — THREE great things actually involving creative projects. So keep following and to be continued!

It Was a Dancing With the Cats Kinda Night

Published July 6, 2013 by Maryanne

cats_dancing_vintage_poster-r4ed85993faa44c90b0876dfa37e23507_xg7cb_8byvr_324I’m up at the crack of dawn and I can’t sleep.

I had so much excess energy last night, it was one of those nights I call “Maryanne Nights” that I haven’t had in a long time. A night where I go to the bedroom and play the most happiest, exciting fun songs, sing at the top of my lungs, dance and jump on the bed for a few hours!

Why?

Because, it doesn’t happen too often, but it happens to all of us. And yesterday it happened to me. A rare moment in life where everything is absolutely perfect.

Because I found a new eye doctor I adore, who has the greatest personality, and I got a perfect eye report! (Just because I’m very near-sighted doesn’t mean I can’t have healthy eyes — and my eyes are very healthy!)

Because all my relationships are excellent! I have the best husband, the best family, the best in-laws, and the best friends!

Because out of the blue two people I highly admire and respect their work contacted me about creative projects!

Because my career (writing and managing musicians) is at a perfect pace and I’m not stressed out.

And most of all, because my Billy Cat — who couldn’t walk a week ago — is walking again thanks to pet acupuncture and laser treatment!

Mind you, he’s not walking perfectly — yet — but he’s trying like all hell. His little paws that were ice cold for days on end are now circulating and they are warm like a kitty’s paws should be.

So, after spinning a few good songs, my husband came up and joined the party with me, along with our kitty Derick. And Billy too. Billy who hasn’t been upstairs in weeks because his little back legs are too weak to climb the stairs.

And the party continued, with lots of smiles, and laughter and happy fun songs! (And cute cats!)

But did I REALLY dance with the cats? Well, Billy, who was always my favorite cat to dance with (because he’s such a mush you can do anything with him) is not quite ready to cat dance yet. He’s getting there though. And I look forward to dancing with Billy on his 20th birthday next year!

And Derick, he don’t dance. He just sings!

Acupuncture for pets and children

SAM_1361My baby, Billy Cat, age 19, receiving acupuncture treatments

Today Billy received his second acupuncture treatment to assist in healing his hypothyroidism which affected his hind legs. The condition depletes the nutrients from his body so his hind legs aren’t strong enough to walk. He has minimal feeling in his back legs.

With acupuncture treatment we hope to see him walk again in a few months. This condition is more common in dogs and many people have healed their dogs with acupuncture. Billy is also receiving laser treatments to help him heal faster. He will be going once a week. And of course he is on medications, both regular and holistic. We’ve covered all grounds, plus Dennis and I give him light massages and lots of love.

Dr. Aleda Cheng from the American Animal Hospital (http://www.americananimalhospital.com/) is treating him and said he is getting stronger, although he did lose a little bit more weight. It is good that he is eating A LOT.

Billy is also making a major effort to try to get up. His little legs are always going and stretching. The little guy is a trooper!

And last week I had the honor to go to St. Joseph’s hospital in Paterson to cover this story about acupuncture for children with cancer: http://www.northjersey.com/paterson/St_Josephs_hospital_expands_program_for_young_cancer_patients.html?c=y&page=1

It was such an honor to be in the company of these very brave children!

I Believe in Good Omens

Published June 19, 2013 by Maryanne

SAM_1220My beautiful Billy Cat, age 19

My heart has been breaking into pieces this past week as I’m watching my kitty’s health get worse and worse. He’s been back and forth to the vet so many times. The main issue is arthritis and thyroid trouble. About a month ago we had to put an additional litter box downstairs because Billy couldn’t climb the stairs anymore. He lost so much weight, he’s like a little bag of bones. Now he’s having the worst time walking.

Dennis and I are babying him, but also trying to encourage him to walk to help build up strength. His new “home” is hiding behind the sofa. We put a little cat bed back there, along with a stuffed animal and an electric blanket. Last night my husband massaged Billy’s backside as he laid on the living room floor. I laid next to him and he was holding me with his paw. Billy and I fell asleep together.

Tomorrow he’s going to an animal hospital that has a veterinary acupuncturist on staff.

I’m a firm believer in acupuncture. It cured my husband’s allergies. It got rid of my pre-menstral breast pain. It always helps when I have back pain or sciatica — so much so that I don’t have to go again for months. Here’s an article I wrote about acupuncture for a health column I used to have: http://verona.patch.com/articles/the-benefits-of-acupuncture-no-pain-all-gain

Interesting, just a few hours after my husband told me about Billy’s appointment, I received a phone call from one of my editors asking if I’d cover a story at the children’s hospital tomorrow.

And guess what the story is about? Little cancer patients who are gaining strength through acupuncture and other natural therapies! What a coincidence and what a good omen. This is definitely God’s way of telling us there is always HOPE.

I am ecstatic and honored to write such a positive story! Tomorrow will definitely be a celebration of natural remedies. I think my Billy will be on the road to a new life in his golden years!

I’m so excited for him!
