“The Gypsy Smiled” is the story of Lucretia “Lucy” Christiansen, a singer/guitarist in her mid-20s, trying to make it in the music business in the late 1980s. Because she’s working two jobs to support herself, she can never make it to band practice on time. Therefore, the leader of her all-girl goth outfit, Daughters of Darkness, kicks her out of the band. The creepy thing is — Lucy was warned that this would happen. An eccentric psychic named Gypsy told her so. Lucy is now feeling like a failure and drowning her sorrows by record store hopping. Though she loves gothic music, she’s also a big fan of “oldies” artists like Lou Christie, who she dreams of working with, creatively. During her record shopping trip, a young fellow goth named Dionysus develops a crush on her and starts following her around like a puppy dog. Lucy fails to take him seriously, especially when she finds out he still lives at home. Plus she’s more focused on revving up her musical career than romance. But Dionysus, real name Scott, turns out to be a killer guitarist and wants Lucy to sing in his band. His father is a famous Elvis impersonator, so Scott knows people “in the biz.” Lucy agrees to be in his band, but Scott has more on his mind than being “just friends.” Knowing how career-focused Lucy is, Scott puts his feelings at bay and they work their musical magic together.

Things are going beautifully until Lucy’s former band mates instigate a fight between her and Scott, causing him to wonder if Lucy is just using him as a vehicle to launch her career as a singing sensation.

Lucy desperately seeks help from psychic Gypsy.

Gypsy has the answers but Lucy lacks the trust. Fed up, Gypsy sends Lucy to an all expense paid new age vacation spa in the mountains; where Lucy could find her own answers.

The Church/The Psychedelic Furs, State Theatre, New Brunswick, NJ

SAM_8303Richard Butler, Psychedelic Furs

I was ecstatic when my husband said he got us second row seats for The Church and The Psychedelic Furs.

I only had one album of The Church and was extremely impressed with their dark, surreal show. The sound was dead on. They had a psychedelic backdrop video show behind them. I was super psyched to hear my favorite song by them, “Reptile.”  Now, to go out and buy more CDs!

For more info, visit: http://thechurchband.net/

I’ve seen The Psychedelic Furs at least four times before and this was probably their best show ever. They were so on the money. Fans were screaming out names of songs, but they could have done anything they wanted, for I have most of their albums and love every song. I guess the mind-blowing moment of the evening, for me, was “Sister Europe,”especially when the sax came in.

Others favorites included: “Heartbeat,” “Heartbreak Beat,” “The Ghost in You,” “Love My Way,” “Heaven,” and “Pretty in Pink.”

It was a most gorgeous energy as every song caressed your soul.

Richard Butler was incredibly jubilant, smiling throughout most of the show. I’ve never seen him so happy, jumping around, dancing and posing for pictures.

The current Psychedelic Furs touring line-up: Richard Butler (vocals), Tim Butler (bass), Rich Good (guitar), Mars Williams (saxophone), Amanda Kramer (keyboards), and Paul Garisto (drums).

Dating Authentic

Published June 14, 2015 by Maryanne

love 1980s

When I wrote my first fiction book, “Love Cats” I had to channel another lifetime since the book not only takes place in the 1980s, but with young people.

I did plenty of “Googling” and watching old television shows to make sure I had the right looks and the right dialogue. Nothing is worse than reading a fiction book that takes place in another decade and everything is dead wrong.

Though there are some things in life that the more things change, the more they stay the time. Like love gone bad. Even in this day and age my single friends complain to me about guys who don’t love them just as they are.

In “Love Cats” Janey Peyton has this issue when she hooks up with famous rock photographer Adam Durian. His demands on Janey are pretty harsh. From telling her what shoes to wear to insisting she lose weight before he takes her out again, the novelty of dating someone famous gets old pretty fast.

This morning I was watching an episode of “The Facts of Life” (television show 1980s) where Blair is dating someone who makes similar demands on her, like suggesting she cut her long hair.

Dating wrong people isn’t an issue exclusive to the 1980s. Girls still do it and always will, until they learn. Like Janey did.

Does Janey find true love after all? What lessons does she learn along the way. Find out. Get your copy of “Love Cats” today. A book for most generations! (18 and over).

Love Cats cover!Cover photo and design by Darlene Foster

It was a thrill working with Darlene Foster (www.darlenefoster.com) again and I’m ecstatic by her vision of my upcoming book “Love Cats.”

“Love Cats” will be my second published book and my first shot at fiction.

It’s the story of Beck Stewart and Janey Peyton. “Love Cats” takes place in the 1980s. Bands like The Cure and Joy Division are the soundtrack as the couple dance the nights away at their favorite New Jersey dark wave clubs Xena and Dusk.

Beck is working class. Well, make that very hard working! And Janey is a spoiled rich girl with too much time on her hands. Not knowing what to make of all the overtime Beck puts in, Janey misunderstands the situation and assumes he’s ignoring her. But all Beck is really trying to do is make a better life for himself — and Janey, if there is a future with her. Even though Beck sees potential, it’s hard to ignore that Janey is selfish and difficult. Plus she hates his beloved cat, Morticia. Will jealousy and insecurities tear the couple apart? And what happens when a kitten mysteriously shows up on cat hater Janey’s doorstep? Find out in this funny, fast-moving, erotic and sometimes dark novel.

When Our Idols Fall

peter murphyPeter Murphy, Godfather of God

(Photo swiped from Google Search)

By now everyone has read the news, Peter Murphy pleads guilty to meth possession in hit and run, three years probation: http://www.slicingupeyeballs.com/2013/10/14/peter-murphy-peads-guilty-meth-probation/

Nothing new for someone famous, this happens all the time … but the problem with this certain circumstance is this is PETER MURPHY!

For those who don’t know who Peter Murphy is, he was the lead singer in Bauhaus, the dark wave band popular in the early 1980s, partially due to their appearance in “The Hunger” starring David Bowie, Catherine Denevue and Susan Sarandon.

After Bauhaus, Peter Murphy had several solo albums, many with inspiring spiritual messages. It’s was Peter Murphy’s song “Socrates the Python” that made me seek out the philosophical works of George Gurdjieff, which was considered underground in the mid-1980s — only friends from California “got it” and I had to walk around with brown paper bags over my Gurdjieff books or people would have thought I was satanic or brain-washed.

Peter Murphy’s was my salvation. It was his music that made me strive to be a better person and it was a spiritual awakening when my friend Vinnie took me to see him perform live at Town Hall in the early 1990s. When he sang, “The Light Pours Out of Me” and the light guy had a stream of light piercing through Murphy’s eyes as Murphy peered slightly above the eye level of the audience. He looked like a modern day Jesus Christ; it was the ultimate moment in stage show theatrics.

It wasn’t until over 10 years later when I had the opportunity to interview Peter Murphy for an online newspaper. We spoke on the phone for almost a half hour. Murphy was a kind man and true gentleman. He spoke lovingly of his family and perked up when I mentioned that like him I was into the work of Gurdjieff. That is when he mentioned Gurdjief groups in NYC. We also spoke of his work with Dali’s Car, a joint effort with my favorite bassist, the late Mick Karn.

A month later he was performing at the Birch Hill Niteclub in New Jersey. Murphy told me to introduce myself, so I did after the show. It was a nice, warm, spring night. Murphy was in a van — not a limo — greeting fans. He was so approachable. I walked right up to him, mentioned our conversation about Gurdjieff and he remember me right away.

On such a high, I stayed outside with friends, watching other fans meet the gothic bat man. Everyone walked away with a smile on their faces. Peter Murphy had such a positive effect on his fans. Girls and guys alike were happy and glowing after meeting him.

Murphy stayed until he met and shook hands with every fan that was outside in the Birch Hill parking lot. Then when his van pulled away, he actually looked out the window and waved to us!

So how does someone go wrong? What makes a man who has it all so weak? Who am I to say? I am nobody to judge, but like so many other fans, I am disappointed and in shock.

I wish nothing but the best for Peter Murphy. I hope whatever it is that is so lacking in his life gets fixed and that he may go back to leading an inspiring life and making great music.

C’mon Peter Murphy, we’re all rooting for you!
