Book Signing at Randy Now’s Man Cave

It was my honor to sign copies of my two books, “On the Guest List: Adventures of a Music Journalist” and “Love Cats” at Randy Now’s Man Cave in Bordentown, NJ, yesterday (Sunday, Dec. 19, 2016).

In addition to rubbing elbows with other authors, Mary Muehleisen was also there representing her late brother, Maury Muehleisen who played guitar with Jim Croce, and died in a plane crash with Jim at the age of 24. She was selling two of Maury’s solo CDs (which are incredible, by the way! What a gorgeous voice he had, and a beautiful guitarist and songwriter).

Interesting story, a customer came in to buy a Jim Croce record for his girlfriend for Christmas. He did not know that Mary Muehleisen was going to be there. What a beautiful coincidence. The customer brought one of her brother’s CDs.

Meet Nicholas Gray!

Yesterday my husband and I got word that our new rescue cat has a perfect bill of health.

He’s about 3-years-old and a friendly little bugger. He loves to cuddle, but really loves to play. He’s also a big guy; at 11 pounds, he’s heavy!

It’s been so long that we had a cat so close to kitten-hood. My last two lived to 19. The oldest, Billy Cat, passed in 2013 and Derick, just a little over a month ago.

Derick wasn’t even gone a week and friends started asking if we wanted a cat. We weren’t ready. We mourned a long time and even after getting Nicholas, things about him reminded us about our others that made us sad.

That’s the thing, you never forget your old cats. But a new one can bring so much joy. Since my other two lived so long, I forgot what it was like to have a cat that loved toys and jumped around a lot and scattered through the house. It’s just so much fun!

Like the other two, Nicholas has some “dog-like” qualities. He loves people. He runs to the door when we come home. And he’s very affectionate, purring up a storm when we hold him.

Just like love for a human being, it’s always when you least expect it that you’ll fall in love with a new pet. When the right one comes along to adopt, you just KNOW it.

We love our new baby and are very happy with him.

Five-Star Review of ‘Love Cats’ on ‘Reader’s Favorite’

Published May 16, 2016 by Maryanne

Love Cats front and back coverLove Cats (back and front cover)

I am ecstatic to accidentally have come across a five-star rating and book review of my second book “Love Cats” on the “Reader’s Favorite” website, written by Janelle Fila: https://readersfavorite.com/book-review/love-cats

Love Cats is available in paperback or via Kindle from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1681020513

Here is Janelle Fila’s five star review (Thank-you Janelle! <3)

Love Cats by Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta is a sizzling romance set in the 1980s that is part historical fiction and part hot and steamy romance. Janey Peyton is a goth chick who also happens to be filthy rich. Alone and lonely, Janey meets Beck Stewart at a trendy night club. The two hit it off and seem to be moving in the right direction. Except for a love of cats, the two have a lot in common (Beck has a cat he loves but Janey is not fond of felines). Until Beck starts spending too much time at work and Janey’s jealousy gets the better of her. She decides to take revenge on Beck and teach him a lesson. Will she ruin the one good thing she has going in her life? How much will Beck take before he gives up on Janey forever?

The best thing about this story is the 1980s setting. The author does a fantastic job of creating a very realistic setting and never deviates from it. Readers who love all things ’80s will love this story. Likewise, readers who are cat fans will also get a big kick out of this story as well. It was fantastically written, especially the two characters. I loved the differences between Janey and Beck, but I also loved when they came together. They had a chemistry that seemed very authentic and I was rooting for them the entire story.

The Flowers of Romance

Published February 9, 2016 by Maryanne

valentines

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and like every year, here come the haters ruining it for the rest of us with their anti-Valentine’s Day rants.

So, once again, I say, get over yourselves, Dear Joy Killers.

Yeah, we don’t need a special holiday to dictate how we feel, but don’t forget St. Valentine was a cool saint, number one, and number two, whenever a whole slew of people are on the same vibe/wavelength, it promotes incredible energy from the universe. So if couples are getting engaged, married or just celebrating their first Valentine’s Day together, it’s a euphoric thrill to bask on that cool/crazy energy. Valentine’s Day isn’t until Sunday, but I’m feeling the groove already.

But haters prevail. Just as we flipped the calendar to read “February” — and so began the “me-me-me” tirades.

As if women aren’t ungrateful enough for the kind things their boyfriends/husbands will do for them, now the latest in Valentine’s hating is the newest generation of feminists dissing on flowers.

And so they moan:

“They’re too expensive.”

“They die.”

“I’d rather have a dinosaur bouquet.” (An ugly dust collector made of polyester — toxic for the environment. And at $39.99, you can definitely get a cheaper flower bouquet).

Then, the most ridiculous reason of all — “Giving flowers means he’s apologizing for doing something bad.”

Give me a break! Just because giving flowers could be a beautiful peace treaty, don’t insult the intelligence and kindness of a good man who gives flowers “just because.”

Just a mere 13 years ago I was still single (and still working in an office) and my boyfriend at the time unexpectedly sent a bouquet to my office — for no reason at all. I was thrilled.

A co-worker saw them and commented, “Was he bad?”

I didn’t know what she meant by that. I thought she was making an S&M reference, so I said, “yeah” and winked at her. Not realizing, at the time, she was making a catty remark; that a guy wouldn’t do such a nice thing. Then it dawned on me later. I could never look that woman in the eye again. That kind of negativity towards men is not for me.

I feel so sorry for those types of women — the man haters, the feminists, and the distrusting who always think a nice gesture has an an ulterior motive. These women will never be happy in the romance department. And the sad thing is, I’m sure many of them are hooked up with poor slobs who will never be appreciated; the kind of guys who can’t do enough for them.

But, I’m an old-fashioned kind of girl who loves flowers! My husband and I often give each other flowers “just because.” They’re pretty. They make the house smell nice. And, yes, they die, but that’s symbolic of the circle of life.

Last fall I treated myself and put a bouquet of flowers in my home office. When they dried out, I left them because they still looked pretty. Then my husband surprised me with new “winter style” bouquet. And then after that a brighter one, as we were enjoying a very mild New Jersey winter so the bright flowers looked absolutely gorgeous as the sun beat through the window.

After four years of marriage, and 10 years together, I am still madly in love with my husband; and incredibly happy for everyone around me who is madly in love with their significant others. (And appreciates old fashioned romantic gestures). ❤

Happy New Year! Wanna See Pictures of My Cat?

Published January 6, 2016 by Maryanne

Derick and SparkyDerick’s World!

Today I had the opportunity to use my New Year’s resolution.

I always make them and I always stick to them. It’s a great way to become a better person. (And yes, I work on that throughout the year, not just in the New Year, but as I’ve said before to Valentine’s haters and holiday haters, it’s the time of year when the energy of mankind is very potent, so GO FOR IT and reap the good karma!)

Anyway, one of the biggest things that annoys me, in life, is when people bang into you and don’t say excuse me. I’m a petite woman, a small target, so why am I so easy to hit? Anyway, I said for 2016 I will no longer get mad when that happens. Instead I’ll goof on the person. Sure enough a woman banged her cart into me at Whole Foods this morning.

I turned around and with a big, enthusiastic smile, I said, “Do you want to see pictures of my cat?”

She looked dumbstruck.

I repeated, cheerfully, “Do you want to see pictures of my cat? You banged your cart into me, so I thought maybe you’d like to get to know me better?”

Then she started laughing really hard and said, “Oh my God, I’m so sorry.”

The cashier was laughing too and so was the bagger. We all had a great laugh because of my awesome New Year’s resolution!
