Book Signing for “On the Guest List” for Nutley Book Club, Nutley, NJ

Last night I was extremely honored to do a book reading/signing for the Nutley Book Club, Nutley, New Jersey, at the Nutley Library.

Of all my book signings since I published my first book, “On the Guest List: Adventures of a Music Journalist” (https://www.amazon.com/Guest-List-Adventures-Music-Journalist/dp/162903908X) this was by far my favorite because the guests read the book prior to the event!

It’s the coolest feeling for an author to hear, “I wanted to meet you!”

We had a great time talking about the book and people sharing their own musical experiences. The one thing I always hear about “Guest List” is that even if readers don’t know the bands I’m speaking about, they are relating because of how my love for music translates on the pages. “Like reading a diary” I’m often told.

Prior to the reading, Maria and Kiran took me to a wonderful dinner at Luna restaurant. I had great conversation and laughs with two wonderful ladies.

It was indeed a five-star night!

Rock Star Wife

What a rock ‘n’ roll weekend it was! I’m always thrilled to see my husband perform onstage; me right in front of the stage, us staring into each others eyes and giving knowing looks.

My husband, Dennis Lords, performed with his band Pharoah (http://www.sexglamgloom.com/) this weekend. Here’s a sample of their music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQxcrUAIH9I

Dennis has also played with Rob Fusari (http://www.robfusari.com/) and The Characters (http://www.thecharacters.net/).

Music has always been my life. It’s unfortunate that I do not play an instrument or sing, but I did once write a children’s song called “It’s Christmas.” It was recorded at Baby Fishmouth Studios (https://www.facebook.com/Baby-Fishmouth-Studio-518623148225118/), produced by Tom Corea. I came up with the lyrics and melody. Dennis but the music to it. After recording the song, we were interviewed by the late Mark Blaustein who had a radio show at Montclair State University.

It was a dream come true having my song played on the radio.

From time to time, I’d be in Baby Fishmouth Studios with Dennis and was asked to sing back up on Come On Christmas (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3HovV9KRs) and I was the Beach Girl spoken vocalist on Sufer’s Christmas (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHFSXh5HoRM) — Hey, Santa, surf’s up!

But, most of the time, I’m happy to take a back seat to my baby and let him shine! On stage, and off, I couldn’t ask for a better husband and kitty daddy!

Happy “Read Across America Day”! Some of you may know I wrote a book called “On the Guest List: Adventures of a Music Journalist.”  It’s a positive book from my teenage years up until my happy marriage. While there are some cool stories about people I met in my career, there’s a lot more about people I met by chance! It’s fun and upbeat.

Below is the back cover with all my celebrity endorsements. The book is available on Amazon or via my publishing company, Next Century: http://www.nextcenturystore.com/on-the-guest-list-adventures-of-a-music-journalist.html

Earlier this year when my first book “Guest List” came out, I did several interviews. This was on of my favorites, on Totally Driven Radio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS-3QdKq6kw&feature=youtu.be

It was so cool, talking about the book and sharing such great stories such as the final days of Max’s Kansas, being friends with Cyrinda Foxe and other cool stuff.

Career

What a pleasant surprise this morning to see my book, “On the Guest List: Adventures of a Music Journalist” pinned on a “Career” board on Pinterest, amongst other music journalist greats like Lisa Robinson and Lester Bangs, which is such an honor because these are the journalists I’ve read when I was 12-years-old! I am humbled as I’ll never have the writing chops they do. “Guest List” is more of a love letter to myself, a recollection of things that meant a lot to me, not necessarily others, but if someone gets it, more power to them! Nevertheless, I’m still stoked to get royalty checks and unexpected surprises like this. I never expected my book to be doing as good as it is!

Guest List Made “Badass Books” List!

I’m pretty jazzed that “Guest List” made the “Badass Books” list on Pinterest:  http://www.pinterest.com/kristenelizam/badass-books/

I never thought of my book to be a great work of literature; just some fun memories written in a fun way. Perhaps more like punk art than journalism. After being a serious journalist for many years, I wanted to do something fun with no rules. I didn’t even hire a copy editor for “Guest List” to make it more “punk.” And all the chapters are arranged by song titles. (Though I’m sure many people reading don’t even know half the titles. THAT is how underground Guest List is!)

All that said, it’s pretty cool to be listed amongst literary geniuses like Bukowski, Hell, Ginsberg. And that’s the beauty of being a reader, your tastes can cover a vast spectrum.

I’m honored and always humbled.

Also, yesterday, another extremely rewarding part of my career, I got to interview several young local performers who will be appearing at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. Check it out, they’re adorable: http://thealternativepress.com/articles/local-youths-are-the-new-voices-of-2013-swing-aw

I had such a blast talking to the kids. This was in person at Keane University.

Busy day yesterday! Today I’m taking time off — much deserved!
