I am humbled and honored to have been a part of the All About Eve Festival of the Arts at the West End Arts Center in Long Branch, NJ. There was some great talent there last night!

Super special thanks to Gregg Glory (Gregg G. Brown) who coordinated the event with Emanuel DiPasquale.

Forty-one poems were selected for the reading.

Mine was “All About Eve”

All About Eve

All about Eve?

What about me?

In a superficial society.

Trendy, Fendi,

Keeping up with Beyonce

Spending at your local foods

People are so freakin’ rude

Pushing shop carts into butts

Let their kids do what they want.

Monopolize the conversation

It’s better than a sex sensation

Demean others, even your friends

The main thing is to “win, win, win.”

Do it daily, do it loud

Do it often so you feel proud

Raise your kid the same way

She’s a princess every day

Problems in the world we see

Ignorance, sickness, poverty

Change would be nice, if only …

Yet we still chant, “Me! Me! Me!”

And, you know, it’s nothing new,

Eve was all about “me” too.

Back then it was forbidden fruit,

Now it’s Botox to stay cute.

Charlton Heston, was once the rage, uh-huh

No one cares what Moses claimed; uh-huh

And the ME goes on. And the ME goes on.

On.

On.

On.

On.

And on the 8th Day God Created Friendships!

Published August 15, 2016 by Maryanne

SAM_0898Joan, Me, Darlene

Friends are such a blessing and I never take any of mine for granted.

August is my birthday month and this lunch date was the kick-off of many celebrations to come — including two other lunch dates with friends, celebrations with my husband, and celebrations with my husband’s family.

Over the weekend it was an honor to spend time with two of my closest friends Joan and Darlene. It was extra special because it was the first time they got to meet each other!

I met Darlene shortly after I started dating my husband, as she’s the long-term girlfriend of my husband’s cousin Tommy. Darlene and I hit it off immediately. Like two peas in a pod, we’re both into music, health, and animals. She’s like a sister to me. ❤

I’ve known Joan since high school. We can’t remember exactly how we met, but it seems like we’ve always been in each others lives. She made my teenage years incredible. We went to so many concerts and dance clubs together. One of my greatest “Joan” memories is dancing with her to “Hang On To Yourself” by David Bowie at the now defunct Aldo’s Hideaway, in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. That is our song. ❤

I love both of my ladies very much! ❤

This weekend Joan surprised me with a beautiful poem she wrote about our friendship. She gave me the A-OK to type it up into this blog.

ENJOY!

Dear Maryanne,

A friendship’s memories are like the waves of the ocean coming in and washing over you.

The thoughts of innocent times, dancing and listening to music from so long ago seem like a dream.

Yearning to spend every moment with each other was the most important thing.

Not knowing what life had in store allowed us to be free, excited and limitless.

If I could go back in time and be that 17-year-old girl again, I would want it to be with you.

Happy Blessed Birthday my Friend

Love, Joan

Never a Dull Day

Published March 2, 2014 by Maryanne

“Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day …” says the Pink Floyd song.

What dull day?

There is never a dull day …

There’s a fun day, a crazy day, a busy day, an exciting day, an enchanting day, a fantastic day, a magical “I can’t wait to see what happens next day” …

There’s a snuggle with the hunny day, a happy kitty day, a no-bra day — yay, and an eat-all-u-want day.

There’s a day for writing, a day for being on the road, a day for promoting, a day to avoid jealous people, a day to shop, a day to love love love love love love everyday is a day to love.

Every day is a day of karma, a day of free things that come my way from paying it forward, a day to have dreams come true, a day to connect, a day for a clean slate, a day to discover, a day to catch up, a day to sit around drinking wine and talking on the phone, a day to express, a day to believe, a day to trust the universe, a day to make your own destiny, a day to pet a kitty, a day to see a cute chihuahua, a day to be old, a day to be young, a day to eat a durian which should be every day.

Play day. Pay day. Friendly day. Record Store Day. Lovely day. Beautiful day. Day light saving. Day dream. Day – oh, daylight come and me wanna go home. Day. He say day he say day he say day.

There’s a let me write a silly poem day. That’s today.

But no … no dull day. Never a dull day.

It’s a Maryanne day.  It’s a cute day.

Yay for today.

Don’t Be Lonely Kitty

DON’T BE LONELY, KITTY

By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta

Don’t be lonely kitty,

Your brother has gone away,

He’s up in Kitty Heaven,

And we’ll all be together again someday.

We’re all in this together,

Grieving and healing in time,

We’re all lucky to have each other,

And treat each other kind.

Don’t be lonely, kitty,

Your brother is no longer in pain,

He’s in a better place now,

And we love him just the same.

Don’t be lonely kitty,

Your Daddy and I love you so,

Don’t be lonely kitty,

We love you and will never let go.

We have so much love to give you,

To show how much we care,

Because you’re a big part of the family

And we love to have you here.

You’re still our snuggle bunny,

You’re still our little boy,

We’ll always hug and kiss you,

Because you bring us so much joy!

Ugly Toes

Ugly Toes

little piggies

Let’s keep those piggies pretty, ladies!

Ladies, it’s summer and I know how you all love to wear comfortable flip flops, open-toe shoes and sandals, but please, I BEG of you, keep those 10 little piggies PRETTY!

Honestly, it doesn’t take that much effort to keep your feet clean and make sure your toe nail polish is done. If that’s too hard, please consider ballerina flats for summer, or a cute pair of sneakers. NOBODY — and I mean NOBODY — likes to see neglected toe nails.

The other day I saw a woman with so much chipped toe nail polish, one toe was completely bare of polish. C’mon … seriously? It does not take long to paint a set of toenails. Personally, I do it every day, using a different color each day to match my outfit (which is why I don’t get professional pedicures, for someone concerned about having nice toe nails as I am, it would be pricey — besides, I think I do a better job doing it myself anyway).

I highly recommend Gabriel Cosmetics for quick drying action and a variety of gorgeous colors.

Alf ELF  has fabulous nail polish remover pads. They really get the job done, including stubborn dark colors. They are cheap and efficient. So if you think you don’t have time to polish your toenails, at least take the old chipped toe nail polish off!

And if you have rough feet, a quick scrub with a pumice in the shower is a good thing. But eating healthy will keep the heels of your feet soft and you won’t have to do anything.

No excuses ladies — do the world a favor and make your feet look pretty as possible! It’s just for a short summer season anyway. If you want to go back to having ugly toes in the winter, be my guest, it’s your life. As long as I don’t have to look at them.

Last night was absolutely wonderful! I got to cover this story about young poets receiving awards. It was mind-blowing how GOOD these young kids were. Very entertaining and heartfelt.
