Mother’s Day is for Cat Moms Too

Me, Veggie Heaven, Teaneck, NJ, Mother’s Day 2022

The year after my father-in-law passed away, I took my husband out for Father’s Day, celebrating him as a cat daddy. I figured it would soften the blow of missing his own father. It was cute, fun, and created a sweet memory. The following year, my husband did the same for me, even though my mom was still around. We’d first go to eat at a restaurant we enjoyed, then go see my mom, who is older and doesn’t like to go out to restaurants anymore. Six years later, we’re still doing it. Not only by taking each other to restaurants, but celebrating with cards and gifts as well.

According to National Day Calendar, there is a pet parent day, the last Sunday in April. But we like to keep it traditional, going with the real Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

Couples who choose not to have children, but pets instead have a strong bond with their pets. They truly are our “children.” And they can be a responsibility much longer than a child. A kid grows up, goes to college at 18, but a cat can live well into its 20s and still be a baby. You have to feed, take to the vet, care, cuddle, worry about.

It’s a beautiful tradition we started. It’s our special way of saying we created this sweet life together — taking in kitties that had no homes. Caring for them, keeping them well fed, healthy, and happy.

Are you a pet parent? Don’t underestimate yourself; you are truly making a difference in a pet’s life. You should be celebrated, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and every day!
