Todd Rundgren And Other Rockers Celebrate Bowie at Union County Performing Arts Center

Published October 28, 2022 by Maryanne

It was a rock-star studded magical night!

My husband and I had 4th row, Todd Rundgren “Celebrating Bowie” Tour at the Union County Performing Arts Center, Rahway, New Jersey. (This beautiful old theatre is where they filmed portions of “School of Rock” and I’m always happy to be there!)

In addition to Todd Rundgren, other musical great included: Adrian Belew (Bowie, NIN, King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Talking Heads), and CdB creator, producer, and featured artist Scrote bring Spacehog’s Royston Langdon, Fishbone’s Angelo Moore, and solo artist Jeffrey Gaines with saxophone great Ron Dziubla (Jon Batiste, Joe Bonamassa), Narada Michael Walden bassist Angeline Saris, and drummer Travis McNabb (Sugarland, Better Than Ezra).

With a cast of such great talent, so many Bowie songs were done to perfection. I loved the way the show flowed from one song into another without any talking, until near the end when the band was introduced. Throughout the show, some songs got me choked up, like Sound & Vision, Starman, and All the Young Dudes; others made me dance in my seat, like DJ, Boys Keep Swinging, and Blue Jean.

But the real magic happened when Let’s Dance got half the audience up from their seats. This was my opportunity to go to the front of the stage, where I remained until the end of the show. The last song before the encore was All the Young Dudes. I turned around to see my husband smiling and waving to me. I motioned him to come to the stage with me. Arm in arm, we experienced the magic. It was a heartfelt moment, that song is the truest Bowie classic.

As an encore, the audience went wild to Suffragette City and Heroes.

Here is the set list and more photos!

Creator of The Addams Family was From NJ

The bust of Charles Addams

Charles Addams, creator of The Addams Family, was from Westfield, New Jersey. The American cartoonist also drew for The New Yorker and his work appeared on many covers.

Each year the town of Westfield, New Jersey, celebrates Charles Addams during the Halloween season. Small businesses paint their store fronts with characters from The Addams Family.

The Rialto movie theatre is currently having a Charles Addams showing. You can see plenty of Addams’ work temporarily housed inside the theater. Learn more here: https://www.centerforcreativity.art/addams-foundation

It was thrilling touching the desk that Charles Addams worked at!

I Live 8 Minutes Away From The Watcher House

Published October 20, 2022 by Maryanne
657 Boulevard, Westfield NJ, October 2022

The Watcher House series is currently a big deal on Netflix.

But those who live in the area were well-aware of these happenings way back in 2014 when it first hit the news — a family was being stalked by mysterious letters.

When my husband and I were first aware of the house, we visited. No one lived there at the time. He was brave and went right up to the porch. I was terrified, so I stayed near the lawn. Who is this “Watcher”? Was he a real person or a psychic phenomena?

Over the weekend, in Halloween mode, we visited The Watcher House again — 657 Boulevard, Westfield, NJ. Because of the Netflix series, there was a line of cars all the way down the street. The home is now occupied and had some Halloween decorations. It was a gorgeous day and quite a few people from other towns were taking photos of the house. We all began having conversations with each other. My husband and I didn’t watch the series and others were telling us how good it was.

Suddenly a car drove by and a woman screamed out the window, “IT’S ALL FAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

We all laughed and agreed, “Who cares if it’s fake? We are having FUN!”

The Angry Librarian Trope

Published October 19, 2022 by Maryanne

I became a public speaker by chance in 2013. As a self-employed person, one of the things I was doing was promoting senior entertainers in libraries and assisted living facilities. When an activities director wanted a health speaker instead of an entertainer, I said, “I can do that!” As someone with a great passion for health, I had enough knowledge to give a great speech and make some money! I did a wonderful job and have been speaking in libraries and assisted living facilities ever since.

Over the years, I’ve figured out that with all the speeches I gave, there were four that were most popular: “Healthy Pasta Alternatives,” “Eat Well for the Holidays,” “History of the Newspaper Industry” and “Going Going Gone: What the Next Generation Won’t Remember.”

It’s been a decade now that I’ve been working semi-steady giving these presentations in person (with the exception of the pandemic, where I worked over ZOOM).

Giving the lectures is the fun part. I meet so many great people and it’s super fun. I don’t have a fear of speaking in front of people. In fact, having an audience excites me!

But then the “work” part comes in–getting the bookings. I put in the time to make my own calls and put the bookings on my calendar. Some librarians are awesome and have invited me to their libraries more than once, presenting many of my lectures. We have awesome working relationships.

Others don’t get it, which is natural in any career. In fact, I always say if too many people “like” you, you’re not pushing yourself hard enough.

But while a simple “not at this time” is sufficient, some librarians go out of their way to be snippy and condescending. I feel sad for them. It seems they believe that being a gate keeper or a puppeteer puts them in a high position. However, by saying “no” in a not so nice way gives them a false sense of control. Performers and presenters see right through that bad attitude. It’s apparent these librarians are not living their dreams like we are. It’s Psychology 101, people are always mean to those they want to be like.

I’ve discussed this with other presenters and performers. We had a good laugh about it. One of my favorite comments came from someone who said, “It’s no problem. I won’t miss a meal by not performing at that venue.”

It’s true. We’re doing this for a living and it’s no skin off our asses if a librarian says, “NO!” But why do they have to be SO ANGRY ABOUT IT?!?! LADY, WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?!!

One time I was trying to book a musician into a library and the librarian said, “I don’t like him.”

I said, “But the patrons did! Last time he performed here, he got a standing ovation.”

She repeated, “But I don’t like him.”

It’s not about you, dear librarian, it’s about the patron. If you don’t have your patrons best interest at heart, you shouldn’t be working as a librarian.

According to demographics, most librarians are over 40 which could explain their bad attitudes. They may be going through menopause or having romance problems, or having problems with their kids. Being a librarian isn’t a typical 9 to 5 job. They put in long hours and most of the time when I give an evening presentation, the librarians are in a hurry to rush out the door, so I can’t stay and chat with patrons who came to see me speak. Can we say “Party Poopers”?

Careers should be fun, and about lifting each other up. The gatekeeper mentality shows a librarian’s true colors, and puts her in the cliche of “angry librarian.” Does she really want to be known as such?

All that said, I’ve had some amazing experiences with many librarians over the years. Some I really look up to for their wisdom and awesome personalities. And some I can honestly call friends. Throughout my career I’ve had great times chatting with librarians about cats, music, and food. These librarians certainly don’t have the librarian stereotype. These librarians love their job and see the performers and presenters as equals — not a threat. And that’s how it should be. We are all professionals, so let’s behave like professionals.

What Makes Middle-Aged Women Seem Older?

Published October 15, 2022 by Maryanne
Maryanne, Summer 2022

First, let me say I am 59 and proud of my age. I am not anti-aging, I am PRO-aging! But when I say “pro-aging” I mean all the positives that come with age — peace, wisdom, faith, calmness, trust, and true happiness. It’s a fact that we will all grow older, so why not embrace it?

Some of us choose to look — and feel — better with healthy eating, exercise, and meditation (me), while others might go the Botox route (not me, but that’s fine if you’re into it). Some of us like to be silly and act immature (me), while others appear younger by keeping up with the latest styles. And nothing is wrong with any of that as long as you are happy with where you are at in life and not chasing after your past like Gloria Swanson in “Sunset Boulevard”.

However, there are three things that I strongly feel make a middle-aged woman seem much older — and stuffier!

  1. Assuming Young People Don’t Know What Vinyl Is. FACT: Rising stars are putting out vinyl left and right. And their young followers are purchasing it. But this isn’t something new. I’ve been buying vinyl ever since I’ve had an allowance and never stopped. And as I got older, I continued to see younger people in record stores buying vinyl. Music will never die, and listening on vinyl is a great thing. That’s something universal that both younger and older generations can relate to. If you don’t want to appear stodgy, don’t make declarations like, “I bet she doesn’t know what a record player is.”
  2. Being Obsessed with Weight. Weight watching is so ’60s, so ’70s, so ’80s, and so ’90s. Since the ’00s, we’ve begun to see more and more BBW (Big Beautiful Women). And it started with a younger generation of women, knowing they look good just as they are. While obesity creates health problems, being curvy doesn’t. We’re seeing curvier models, curvier actresses, and curvier women in the streets. But many women in my age group and older have missed that memo. Some still over obsess about their own bodies — and the bodies of other women. And I’m not just talking about being a gym rat or a yoga person, I’m talking about people who fear food and still believe no one is good enough unless they are a size 0. I’ve heard of older women avoiding restaurants in order to stay at their goal weight. That is not healthy. We need to socialize. We need to celebrate. We need to be okay with not always being perfect. Even bodybuilders have their off days and cheat days. If a woman of a certain age is too preoccupied with food and weight, it might be a good idea to consider therapy (and I say this with sincerity). The most liberating thing about being alive in the 21st century is that we’re now a society filled with beautiful people of all weights, shapes, and sizes. Thinness obsession is a dated mindset and it is making you seem old granny-ish.
  3. Putting Down Other Women. Why do older women still do this? It’s an outdated concept that has to go. Young women don’t hurt, they support. I’ll never forget seeing a You Tube video of Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande fawning all over each other. They were both fans of each others music. It was absolutely adorable! We’ve come a long way from the Joan Crawford/Bettie Davis feuds. Or have we? Why can’t older women learn from the younger female generation. Why are older women so hesitant to give each other compliments? Why do older women still feel superior giving digs? In my humble opinion, being nasty ages a person. Do you really want to be known as an old bitch?

A Client’s Dog Almost Bit Me

Published October 13, 2022 by Maryanne
Photo by insung yoon on Unsplash

I love animals.

Though I am a cat person, I love dogs too.

I’m the person dogs run up to in the streets, begging for a kiss. I get down on my knees and they slobber all over me. Owners apologize, but I LOVE doggy kisses!

About a month ago I scored a new client for a project that couldn’t be done remotely.

I was ecstatic to see the client had a little doggie. Immediately I was rubbing the dog’s belly during a free in-house consult which I offer all potential clients..

During the consult, the client wanted to see pictures of my kitties. When I handed the phone to her, the dog flipped out and began barking. It scared the shit out of me. Obviously passing a phone over a dog’s head was not a good idea. Nevertheless, I took on the project, assuming this was a one-time incident.

I was wrong.

Shortly afterwards, there was another incident. I was working for awhile and then got up to use the bathroom. The dog ran up to me, growled and jumped up to my stomach and grabbed my shirt with his teeth. I was terrified. I never had an experience like this in my life.

As a professional, I tried to work through my fears and continued to see the client. Whenever I was there, the dog barked and whimpered while contained in a large cage. The client caved and took the dog out on a leash. Often when the dog saw me, he barked and growled. It freaked me out. I’ve had other clients with dogs and cats. Never a problem.

When a neighbor came to visit, she shared that the dog nipped her!

A few more incidents happened, but I will not get into it. You get the picture.

I started to get a guilt complex and thought I was doing something wrong. I began having nightmares. Do I have a fear of dogs? Should I see a therapist for this “problem”? After much research, and chatting with friends who owned dogs, the answer was no. The problem wasn’t me, but the client.

Here is why:

  1. Dogs need to be trained and socialized, early on, not spoiled.
  2. The dog owner is the master. When dogs bark at guests, there should be a signal, telling the dog to stop. A dog should not jump on guests. (Note, if a dog is friendly, I LOVE when he/she jumps on me. It’s adorable! But when they are growling and showing teeth, that is not a good sign).
  3. If a guest is afraid of your dog, it’s not on them, it’s on you. Keep the dog contained in an area so your guest can feel safe. Holding a dog on a leash, isn’t good enough.

Two days after getting down on myself for this experience, I came to my senses. I am NOT afraid of dogs, only dogs that are territorial and not trained properly. Soon afterwards, I pet two dogs in the street that I never saw before. I got sweet kisses from them. I felt safe. And happy.

Yes, I love dogs. I am not afraid of dogs. That is my truth. I won’t let one bad experience define me as an animal lover. There are no bad dogs; only uneducated dog owners.

Eyesight Improves on a Vegan Diet!

Published October 12, 2022 by Maryanne

MY EYESIGHT IMPROVED ON VEGAN DIET!! ❤
I am ecstatic! Just got back from my yearly eye exam and have the best news!! My eyesight improved, for the second year in a row and I was able to get a lesser prescription for my contact lens–for the second year in a row, after having a stable higher prescription since 2011.

Check it out, back in October 2021, I was only vegan for two months and my eyes went from -9.50 in both eyes to -9.00 in my left eyes.

Now, two years later, My right eye is now -9.00 and my left eye is -8.50! My eyesight hasn’t been this good since I was in my 30s, back in the 1990s! And my eye health is excellent, including a great retina. AND in a few months I can go back and get REGULAR glasses (for around the house)! I no longer need the transitional glasses! ❤

Mind you, there are three other things I am doing that may have attributed to my eye health improvement:

  1. Joe Dispenza meditations. He actually did say that people’s eyesight improved while attending his retreats.
  2. Taking a vegan eye supplement.
  3. Scalp massages for better hair. Last April a stylist ruined my hair using too much bleach when she dyed it magenta. My hair was very dry. I’ve since decided to let my hair grow back to it’s natural brown color. It’s now a cool ombre. The magenta faded to strawberry blonde. Anyway, since last April I’ve been doing scalp massages two to three times per week, and my hair is very soft and back to normal. I think flipping my hair and massaging with my head down is bringing more blood circulation to my eyes as well!

I guess you can say, the eyes have it!

From Shelter to Supermodel!

Published October 11, 2022 by Maryanne
Sammy (Photo by James Esposito)

A few weeks ago, my cat Sammy had the opportunity to model collars for Only An Ocean (Max & Molly series) (https://onlyanocean.net/).

Working with photographer, James Esposito (https://www.instagram.com/jimesposito_photo/?hl=en) , was an honor. He was great with Sammy, giving him treats of fresh chicken as a reward.

It was a wonderful experience, and I knew Sammy would be great because he is a natural “people person” kind of cat. He’s extremely “chill.” He enjoys attention and when friends take photos of him. He’s a real ham! And that’s exactly why I adopted him at St. Hubert’s Animal Shelter back in 2019. Sammy had purr-sonality! While other cats at the shelter were aloof, Sammy made it KNOWN that he was available. He walked right up to me. “Pick him up,” said a woman who worked there.

I picked him up three separate times before making a decision. We already had one cat, Nicholas. And our Benny cat had just passed away. I wasn’t sure. Some driving unknown force made me adopt him. Two other families took him back to the shelter. Perhaps deep down I knew he needed a permanent, loving home.

Then when we took in an abandoned feral kitten during the pandemic, it was Sammy who stayed near the kitten, making sure he was okay. Now all three cats, Sammy, Nicholas, and the kitten we named “Happy” are all buddies.

Sammy came a long way from being a sheltered cat. Even though he spent most of his life in a shelter, he’s extremely loving and trusting. Any friend who comes to the house is welcomed by Sammy, who runs to the door to greet them. Sammy loves to sleep all day on my new ottoman, which he claimed. But he’ll wake up for treats and cuddling!

When my husband and I saw the photos on the Only an Ocean website, we were over the moon! I was so proud of our baby, I got choked up! James Esposito truly captured Sammy’s laid-back, trusting personality.

If your home needs a loving pet, go to your local shelter. You never know, your pet may become a supermodel too!
