Uh-Oh, the Vet!

Published May 10, 2023 by Maryanne

Scared at the vet, but a real trooper!

Sammy is the cat everyone loves. The vet referred to him as a “dog cat” and said he was the best pet of the day!

Finding a good vet that is in your area and has nothing but 5-stars is a job in itself. I found two in New Jersey. Not too long ago, I noticed Sammy’s mouth was puffy. The first 5-star vet I took him to was able to heal the infection he had with medication, but he needed dental — and she didn’t do dental. So, back to the drawing board.

After much research I found an incredible vet that does dental. In fact, it’s his specialty. And, not only that, he spaces out visits in such a way that you get full attention — not a “cattle call” vet. He was worth the wait — two hours of a thorough examination for our kitty. And now we’re waiting again on bloodwork to see if Sammy can go through with a full dental procedure.

From what the vet could tell us, our little “senior” cat who is 13-years-old, is in good shape. He added, because of all the good care we give him.

Yes, for the past four years we gave him the best care, as Sammy wasn’t around since kittenhood. I adopted him as a senior from a shelter. I’ve shared this story before. He was sent back to the shelter by two different families. Yet, he’s the sweetest cat. All he wants to do is cuddle. (And eat!)

Sammy, at home, much more chill!

After we hear about the bloodwork, which should be today, we will book for dental extractions, six weeks out. Luckily it’s not an emergency because we really want this vet we are working with, and he’s booked solid because he’s GOOD.

When it comes to pets, you have to do extensive research in finding, not a good vet, but a GREAT vet! If someone leaves a bad review about a vet, it’s not being cruel, it’s being honest and it can help someone else. Pets are our responsibility. They deserve nothing but the best. Their future is in our hands. The bond between pet and pet parent is extraordinary.

  • Ah, those eyes say it all!
For sure, a good vet is paramount and only when you need one do you realize it.
We’ve had dogs for many years, and I’ve blessed our vet so many times. He is a hero for many, I know.
Such a brave kitty! (And Mom).

  • At 16-1/2 years old when he finally passed away, Diego had great teeth. Even the vet remarked about that (and his coat). He got his teeth brushed several times a week. Note: I began brushing his teeth when he was an older cat and it still payed off.

I started Ramses on that same routine right away – except he gets his teeth brushed every morning! He begs for it. Well, he likes the taste of the toothpaste and gets a small treat afterward.

You may want to give it a try with your fur-babies, as well. You can start with a dab of toothpaste on your finger and work up to using the brush.

  • We had a few vets that made some mistakes that caused a lot of suffering. Luckily we eventually found a veterinarian who is fantastic. Unfortunately their clinic was destroyed by a tornado, but they rebuilt and are back up and running.

  • What do you think?
