One of the few regrets I have about deactivating my Facebook page is that I no longer have interaction with Coyote Shivers. He’s a cool musician who isn’t “above” conversing with his fans, or going to their pages, commenting and giving a “thumbs up,” and I miss that!
I first discovered his music around 2002 when his CD came across my desk (either at The Aquarian Arts Weekly, where I worked for a brief time, or The Montclair Times, where I worked for seven years — I forgot). I love his music and his witty lyrics.
One night, when I first started dating my husband Dennis, we shared a bottle of something in my Montclair apartment and listened to Coyote’s double CD, “Coyote Shivers Gives It to Ya Twice.” We both got a kick out of the lyrics and had such a great time.
I never saw Coyote Shivers perform live, never met the guy, and was very late on the “Empire Records” band wagon, where Coyote played Berko and featured his song “Sugar High” which he performed with Renee Zellweger at the end of the movie.
How did this movie slip by me in 1995?!
One of my friends was shocked too. She said, “You never saw ‘Empire Records’?! It’s such a ‘Maryanne movie.'” And she was right, it was! The DVD is now in my collection and on a semi-heavy rotation of “cool movies to watch when I can’t sleep.”
When I deejayed in NYC in the early 2000s at The Raven and The Pyramid Club, I’d often open my set with “Plus One.” (Or the theme from “Mighty Mouse” by The Sandpipers).
Like so many other fans, I wish Coyote Shivers would put out a new album. (Or come perform in NYC again! PLEASE!!!!) A few years ago he put out a fun song with his beautiful lady, Pleasant Gehman, “Lockdown Love.”
If any Coyote Shivers fans are out there, please let me know if he put out any other new songs, because I’m not on Facebook (or Twitter or Instagram).
And let’s all wish Coyote Shivers a Happy Birthday, a sugar high, and whatever other high he wants!
